Branson’s writing reaches readers who have experienced personal loss, while also speaking to anyone who has wrestled with life’s fragile and bittersweet moments.
At its core, the book is a reminder that grief does not have to be faced alone. Through her words, Branson points readers toward the healing power of God’s grace and the peace that can be found even in seasons of deep sadness. Her poetry encourages reflection, prayer, and a renewed connection to faith, making Mourning Whiskers a meaningful read for those seeking comfort and spiritual encouragement.
Branson’s own life has been shaped by perseverance, faith, and remarkable strength. Born on December 30th, known in her family as Hog Killing Day, she was raised in a hardworking Wendish family on an isolated Texas farm. Alongside her beloved older brother, Russell, she grew up exploring the wilderness and building memories rooted in curiosity, adventure, and a deep sibling bond.
Her father, a World War II prisoner of war and survivor of the Bataan Death March, taught her the importance of courage and endurance. Her mother, a dedicated and trailblazing nurse, inspired Kathryn to pursue a career in nursing. Kathryn earned her BSRN from the University of Texas and later became a nurse anesthetist, balancing a demanding medical career with family life.
Throughout her journey, Branson faced extraordinary challenges, including the loss of her brother to COVID, multiple failed back surgeries, a rare lung disease, and the tragic death of her husband in a car accident. Yet through every hardship, she continued to lean on faith and the wisdom of her father, who often reminded her to never give up.
After enduring a major final surgery at Vanderbilt and a long healing process, Kathryn found renewed purpose in storytelling. Her love for writing became a way to transform pain into testimony, and her journey eventually led her to Atticus Publishing, where her dream of sharing her story and words with readers came to life.
Today, Kathryn Branson continues to write with gratitude, courage, and faith. Mourning Whiskers stands as a testament to her resilience and her desire to inspire others who are walking through grief, reminding them that healing is possible and hope can still be found.
Mourning Whiskers is a touching and spiritually uplifting collection for readers seeking comfort after loss, encouragement in difficult seasons, and a deeper connection to faith.
